When I hear the words “cream cheese,” my mind automatically goes to delicious cream cheese spread on a toasted bagel. Sometimes it makes me think of creamy cheesecake.

You probably have the same initial thoughts about cream cheese, but in reality, cream cheese has so many great uses in the kitchen beyond bagels and cheesecakes.

Cream cheese is a great addition to a number of recipes and dishes. It has the power to make just about any dish tangier, creamier, and heftier.

I really enjoy adding cream cheese to soups and pasta sauces, using it as a base for dips and frosting, and incorporating it into other meals that just need a little bit of a boost.

For such a simple ingredient, cream cheese can really accomplish a lot in the kitchen by adding tang, texture, and more to whatever you are whipping up.

Cream cheese also comes in different forms: blocks, whipped, as a spread, and so on. With these variations, it can be hard to measure the right amount of cream cheese.

One-third cup of block cream cheese can weigh more than the same amount of whipped cream cheese. This disparity is because whipped cream cheese has more air, making it lighter.

What is cream cheese?

Cream cheese is a soft and mild cheese made from milk and cream. It is easily spreadable and made from cow’s milk.

I love how subtle the taste of cream cheese is compared to sharper cheeses such as cheddar cheese or parmesan cheese.

Though the texture is very different, I would compare the flavor of cream cheese to that of cottage cheese.

In texture, it’s probably most similar to ricotta cheese or mascarpone but tangier than both of those in its flavor.

This mild flavor with a slight tang makes it so easy to add cream cheese to both sweet and savory dishes.

How many ounces of block of cream cheese is 1/3 cup?

Cream cheese comes in many different forms. One of those forms is in the shape of an 8 ounce block of cream cheese. If you’ve ever seen a package of Philadelphia cream cheese, you know what I’m talking about.

A block of cream cheese is more dense than, say, a tub of whipped cream cheese.

Since it has more density, a ⅓ cup of block cream cheese will have different weight measurements than an airier form of cream cheese.

A ⅓ cup of a block of cream cheese is about 2.6 ounces or 75 grams if you prefer the metric conversion.

How many ounces is 1/3 Cream cheese?

Figuring out how many ounces of cream cheese is in ⅓ cup depends on the type of cream cheese you are measuring. The two main types of cream cheese are regular and whipped. 

Regular cream cheese usually comes in a block and is denser. Whipped cream cheese typically comes in a tub and is more airy.

Whipped cream cheese is used more often as a spread for bagels. Regular cream cheese is preferred for cooking.

If you are measuring ⅓ cup of regular cream cheese, it will be roughly 2.6 ounces or 75 grams. One-third cup of regular cream cheese also equals about 2.5 servings.

Whipped cream cheese weighs a bit less. One-third cup of whipped cream cheese is equivalent to 2 ounces or 57 grams. Even though it weighs less, it still equals about 2.5 servings.

Though .6 ounces might not seem like a big difference, in recipes that require precise measurements, such as in cheesecake recipes, that difference will make a difference.

How much Oz is a 1/3 cup?

The amount of ounces in a ⅓ cup highly depends on the contents of the cup. What you are measuring has everything to do with how much it will weigh.

As we know, ⅓ cup of regular cream cheese weighs 2.6 ounces, and a ⅓ cup of whipped cream cheese only weighs 2 ounces.

One important factor to keep in mind is whether you are measuring dry ingredients or liquid ingredients.

For example, a cup of milk is about 2.9 fluid ounces, while a cup of flour is about 1.47 ounces.

The number of dry ounces in ⅓ cup is usually less than the liquid ounce of wet ingredients. This difference in weight happens because dry ingredients have more room for air, while there isn’t any air to factor in for wet ingredients.

Is 8 oz cream cheese 1 cup?

One of the most common ways cream cheese is sold is in an 8 ounce package. The most popular is the Philadelphia original cream cheese that I’m sure you’ve seen before.

An 8 ounce package equals approximately 1 US cup of cream cheese. So, if a recipe calls for 1 cup of cream cheese, there is no need to whip out the measuring cups. Just toss in an 8 oz package of cream cheese.

This rounded measurement makes the 8 oz box of cream cheese so easy to cook and bake with!

How to use cream cheese?

Cream cheese can be used in so many ways! 

It works great for thickening soups and sauces to make your meals more filling. Cream cheese can often substitute for heavy cream or whole milk, which are common ingredients in thick soups.

Cream cheese is also a great base for dips. Some of my favorite cream cheese based dips are buffalo chicken dip, baked crab dip, and spinach and artichoke dip.

Or, if you want to quickly satisfy your sweet tooth, combine cream cheese with some sugar, vanilla, and chocolate chips, then serve with graham crackers or vanilla wafers as a cheesecake inspired dip.

In the dessert realm, cream cheese is probably most famous for cheesecake, but it can also add creaminess and tang to other desserts, such as ice cream.

It also makes a great frosting base because the tang balances out the sweetness so nicely.

Of course, I can’t leave out probably one of the most classic ways to use cream cheese, which is just by itself! Sometimes simply spreading some cream cheese on a bagel is all it takes for a delicious and quick bite.
