Meatballs are such a amazing invention! I wish I could personally thank the person who came up with them. And I love serving them all the time. To me they are blank slate for so many different flavors and there are so many ways to serve them.

The perfect party food, not only because everyone gobbles them up as soon as I put them out, but so easy to just toss in the crock pot and let them do their thing!

If you’re looking for a new one to try, I have 13, now 14 of my own and a collection of ones that I got from my other food blogger friends. Check all the meatball recipes here.

This recipe is a spin on these honey mustard meatballs. They are the perfect blend of sweet and spicy, just like these cranberry jalapeno meatballs.

Serve them as a crowd favorite appetizer or turn them into a kid-friendly dinner over mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredient Notes

  • Meatballs – Use frozen cocktail meatballs you get in the freezer section or make a batch of homemade meatballs. I don’t recommend using raw meat or uncooked meatballs, they will break apart and you will be left with a “meat sauce” of sorts. Although, it will be delicious 😉
  • Honey – If you don’t like the heat, use regular honey. But this recipe is all about the hot honey. My favorite brand is Mike’s Hot Honey but you can also make your own by mixing honey with some hot sauce.
  • BBQ sauce – Use your favorite plain barbecue sauce. If you use one that is overly flavored or extra smoky, it will cover up the flavor of the hot honey.
  • Mustard – I like to use Dijon mustard since it has a little sweetness to it but you can also use regular yellow mustard or a whole grain mustard instead.

Serving Suggestions

These are delicious all on their own, especially covered in all that sauce. Just set out some toothpicks and let everyone crowd around the crockpot. Round out your party menu with a cheese ball, and a cool, creamy dip and crackers.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers, in an airtight container, in the fridge for up to 4 days. Be sure to pour the sauce over them to keep them from drying out.

Reheat in the oven or in a shallow skillet on low until heated through. If the sauce gets a little too thick, thin it out with a little water or beef broth.

You can reheat them in the air fryer at 300F. And watch that the sauce doesn’t burn by turning them often.

Perfect For Freezing

When I make meatballs I usually make a few batches. They are perfect for keeping in the freezer for party, dinner, or snack emergencies.

You can do the same with these meatballs! Make a double batch, and save one for later. I do this all the time with my BBQ meatballs and serve them with some coleslaw.

Once you cook them, cool them completely. Then store in a freezer safe container or a vacuum sealed bag for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight and then reheat.

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • Add the meatballs to the crockpot while still frozen, thawed ones may break apart too easily when stirred.
  • Use your favorite brand of hot honey or mix 1 tablespoon hot sauce per 1 cup honey.
  • Be sure to stir the meatballs often so the sauce doesn’t scorch on the bottom.
  • For easier clean up, use a crockpot liner. These are my favorite ones!
