Homemade Fry Seasoning Recipe

What do you like on your french fries? Is there something else besides plain old salt and pepper? Are you a ketchup dipper? What about mayonnaise?

I am a purist when it comes to my fries. I like salt and a lot of it. But, if I am feeling wild and spicy, seasoned fries are the way to go. Some “seasoned” fries are actually coated in a thin breading that has herbs and spices in it.

Whatever your favorite cut of french fries is (mine is steak fries) keep it simple, and a good dusting of the perfect seasoning mix is all you need!

What is Fry Seasoning made of?

Not to be confused with the popular seasoning or seasoning salt, french fry seasoning is a combination of the best herbs and spices that bring out the best of the potato!

The best part of making it homemade is that you can add your favorite herbs to suit your cravings. And, if you are salty like me, a little extra!

simple ingredients for a spice blend

Ingredients Needed

Salt – I like Kosher salt but you can use sea salt.

Paprika – Regular paprika is great. Substitute smoked paprika.

Garlic powder – I like garlic powder or granulated garlic.

Garlic salt – If you don’t have this you can just add more garlic powder.

Pepper – Ground black pepper.

Parsley – For a pop of color.

Celery salt – I love this, but you can leave it out if you like.

Cayenne pepper – This is optional if you don’t want the extra heat.

sprinkle this fry seasoning on frozen or fresh fries.

How to Season Fries

I like to use 2 teaspoons of the seasoning per 8 ounces of fries.

Depending on the type of fries and how you are preparing them determines how you season them.

Oven-baked fries: Brush with oil or spray with cooking spray, sprinkle on seasoning.

Air Frying: I like to spread the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for a few minutes. Once they start to cook, open the air fryer and sprinkle on the seasoning.

Deep Frying: Season the fries as soon as they come out of the deep fryer when they are hot and have a little oil still on them. This helps the seasoning stick to the fries.

How do you get the seasoning to stick to the fries?

Toss the homemade fries in olive oil to lightly coat them. You can also spray with a light cooking spray, or brush the oil on them with a pastry brush.

Sprinkle on the seasoning and it will stick to the potatoes. Then bake or fry as usual.

Frozen french fries are easy to season because they have a layer of moisture on them when you remove them from the freezer.

After you make them, try them with this Fry Sauce and these Mini Chicken and Waffle Sliders.

store this fry seasoning in spice jars or make a batch as a gift for a neighbor

How to Store

An airtight container is best. It keeps the spices from turning stale and losing their flavor.

You can also use a spice jar with a shaker top so it’s easy to sprinkle on those hot fries!

Like all your other spices and seasoning, a cool, dry, and dark spot in your kitchen is the best place to store it. I have a spice drawer next to my cook top that is convenient.

Uses for Fry Seasoning

If you like this seasoning mix, try my other popular spice mixes like Chicken Seasoning, Steak Seasoning, and BBQ Dry Rub. You will want to use these on everything!

My youngest adores fry seasoning and I'm not a fan of storebought with the fillers, so made him a big bottle to take to college with him. He was thrilled and is enjoying it on so many things he said!
