Potatoes should be their own food group, AMIRIGHT?!?
Not only are they my son’s favorite food (he even has a potato shirt) but they are also mine! Well, they are tied with pasta if I’m being honest.
I have always been a french fry girl. My son’s and I play a game called “longest fry.”
When we eat fries, whether they be at home or out, when one of us says “longest fry” we have to search in our own stash, pull out the longest one we have, and measure it with everyone else’s.
The one with the longest french fry, gets to eat everyone else’s longest fry candidate.
Kind of silly, but it’s TRADITION!
french fries are great but TATER TOTS are quickly becoming the new potato of choice in our house.
Crispy outside, tender and fluffy inside, what’s not to like? Plus they are more versatile than fries in that you can eat them for breakfast. (I eat french fries for breakfast too!)
Not only are they acceptable for breakfast (Hello Hashbrowns!) but they are a delicious casserole topping and make great cups for holding other items like cheese.
Don’t get me started on all the “Totchos” out there!
So how do we make the the most of our tater tots? SIMPLE!
Hot with a light dusting of salt or your favorite seasoning. You can deep fry or even oven bake them but making them in the AIR FRYER is the way to go!
Let me show you how easy it is…

Air Fryer Tater Tot Ingredients
- frozen tater tots (I love Alexia brand best!)
- cooking spray (coconut or avocado oil)
- salt or other favorite seasoning
How do you make tater tots in the air fryer?
STEP ONE: Preheat the air fryer to 400F. Spray the air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray.
STEP TWO: Spread tater tots evenly on bottom of basket in a single layer. Cook at 400 degrees F for 5 minutes.
STEP THREE: Open the air fryer, shake the basket, and spray the tots with a little cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt. Place tater tots back in air fryer and cook for another 5-6 minutes or until crispy!
STEP FOUR: Remove tater tots and place on a serving plate. Sprinkle with more salt if desired. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or condiments.
How long does it take to cook tater tots in an air fryer?
I like to start with 10 minutes and check them every 1-2 minutes until I get just the right level of crispiness!
Why are air fryer tater tots better?
Lots of reasons!
- Healthier that oil
- Crispier than baking
- Easier to prep and clean up
- Quicker than the oven
- Just 3 ingredients!
How do you make extra crispy tater tots?
A spritz of cooking spray will not only allow the salt to stick to the tots better but will make the outside super crispy!
What to serve with tater tots?
These are a great snack or a side dish along with a BBQ chicken sandwich, a juicy burger, or a well dressed hot dog!
Dip them in this delicious remoulade sauce for a cajun kick!
Take Two Tapas Tips
- preheat your air fryer so there are no cold spots.
- a quick spritz of cooking spray will help them get even crispier and browner and help with seasoning stick better.
- be sure to shake or flip your tots half way through the cooking process so they are evenly cooked.
- add your seasoning half way through so it can stick and doesn’t burn.
- use good quality tater tots. My fave brand is Alexia!
- serve right out of the fryer for best results
Are tater tots gluten free?
my favorite brand is but be sure to check the packaging to make sure!
My favorite air fryer to use?
Do you have to preheat your air fryer?
No but I would highly recommend it
How many can I put in the air fryer at once?
I like to keep mine in a single layer for the crispiest tater tots but if you have to cook a bigger batch, be sure to shake the basket a couple of times during cooking so all the tots get crispy.
How do I store them?
Once they are air fried, you can store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Can I reheat them?
To reheat them, toss them back in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes or until hot.
