Onion Soup Mix
Homemade onion soup mix is a must have pantry staple. It will save you money and tastes so much better than store-bought packets. This simple blend uses ingredients you already have (most likely), with zero weird extras.

I used to go through those little packets from the grocery store faster than I could buy them. Seriously, I’d use up a whole box in a week!
Between making dips for parties, using it to season my pot roast, and making extra gravy for these poutine poppers, it’s basically my kitchen bestie.
Making a big batch and storing it in a mason jar, means I have some on hand whenever I need it. Which is basically all the time. No more pulling out a bunch of individual spices every time or running to the store because I’m out of packets. I just scoop and go!
It’s perfect for a quick dip, adding some extra flavor to soup, and great for grilling burgers and chops. And homemade always tastes better because there are no weird things you can’t pronounce.

Ingredient Notes
- Beef bouillon – Use the powder, granules, or crush bouillon cubes into a powder. I don’t recommend using the chicken ones as the flavor isn’t as good.
- Onion flakes – Use larger dehydrated onion flakes if possible because they add some great texture or use the minced onion. It makes it feel more homemade and fresh.
- Garlic powder – Substitute granulated garlic if you need to.
- Celery salt – You can use celery seed if you need to.

Serving Suggestions
This recipe makes 18 tablespoons which is the same as 3 packets from the store. So when substituting in a recipe, 6 tablespoons (or 1/3 cup) is the same as one packet.
How To Use Onion Soup Mix
- For soup: Mix 6 tablespoons in 4 cups of hot water or beef stock.
- French onion dip: Stir 3 tablespoons in 16 ounces of sour cream. The box says 1 packet but I feel like the taste is stronger in the homemade version so I start with less. Taste and add more if you prefer.
- Gravy/Au Jus: Dissolve 3 tablespoons in 1 can warm beef broth and dip your sandwich in.
- Extra Flavor: Sprinkle in with crockpot beef roast, meatloaf, roasted potatoes, pork chops, even chicken breasts to add a little something extra to your recipes.

Storage
I prefer storing mine in a glass jar like a mason jar. You can make a large batch and it will keep for months. Plus, it makes a great hostess gift. Portion some out into smaller jars and add a tag with instructions and a pretty ribbon!
Homemade Pantry Mixes
There are a ton of great shortcuts available like cake mix and seasoning packets at the store. And they are totally helpful and I use them all the time. But, whenever I can, I make them homemade to avoid all the extra stuff and save some money.
Some of my favorites are this self-rising cornmeal mix, homemade bisquick breakfast mix for pancakes and waffles, and this Au Jus gravy mix for chicken and pork chops.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you store it in an airtight container, this onion dry soup mix will last up to 6 months. I like add a teaspoon or two to recipes that mine doesn’t last long.
The homemade version is gluten free and sugar free. Just be sure to check the ingredients of your beef bouillon granules to make sure it’s gluten free. Things like anti-caking agents can contain wheat so read carefully. Also, a few of the store bought brands of onion soup mix contain sugar or maltodextrin, yeast extract, corn syrup, and MSG. Things you might want to avoid which is why homemade is best.
