Forget about buying expensive Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix with way too much cinnamon, make your own at home. Leave out all the fillers and anti-caking agents in store bought spices and just have pure ingredients for better flavor!

What’s the deal with Pumpkin Pie Spice costing $4.47 at the store? Really?!?!? A bottle of it which has about 2 tablespoons worth of spices in it, costs more than a PS Latte? I can’t deal with that!
I am so frustrated with the store, couple that with the fact that I am cheap, and the result is not pretty! What can I do about it? Make it myself!

What is in Pumpkin Pie Spice?
I have all the ingredients already! I bought a can of ground ginger and haven’t really used that much of it so I need to before it loses its potency. Same thing with all that nutmeg and ground cloves!
I need to keep lots of cinnamon on hand because Connor likes lots of cinnamon on his french toast so I buy that in one of those bulk warehouse containers that I have to store under the sink because it is too tall for the pantry shelves.
Making your own spice mixes are easy AND you can control what you put in. Like more ginger? Add it in! You also don’t have those drying and anti-clumping agents in it like the ones at the store.

Making pumpkin spice at home is very easy. Most likely you already have all the ingredients. Most recipes contain these basic spices. The only differences are the amounts.
Making your own spice mix means you control the amounts. This is perfect because I want more cinnamon and less cloves!

Pumpkin Pie Spice Substitute
This recipe is a great substitute for store-bought pumpkin spice and keeps it simple. Some recipes get a little too inclusive in my opinion by including cardamom, white pepper, and even Mace.
Ever heard of mace? Besides it being a pepper spray for getting rid of unwanted people, it is a spice that comes from nutmeg. The coating of the nutmeg seed is called an aril, which is removed, dried, and then ground to make the mace spice.
The flavor of mace is like a mixture of cinnamon and pepper or extra strong nutmeg. I found some in my mom’s spice cabinet but it was like 300 years old. Go figure…
If you don’t like cloves, mace pairs perfectly with nutmeg.
Can you substitute allspice for pumpkin pie spice
You can use pumpkin spice in place of allspice in a recipe but I would not recommend using just allspice in a recipe that calls for pumpkin spice. It’s a little on the strong side.
is apple pie spice the same as pumpkin pie spice
The two mixes are basically the same. Apple pie spice doesn’t have cloves in it so it’s perfect for someone who doesn’t care for them as much. If you like cloves, add a little with the apple pie spice and you are all set.
how much pumpkin pie spice do I use instead of individual spices?
For 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, use 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1/8 teaspoon allspice. You can adjust the amounts in these proportions as needed.
Now you can add your own Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice to whatever you like! Lattes, pies, oatmeal, etc. This MUST HAVE Fall Spice goes with just about everything. Plus you get to use up those spices that you have in the back of your pantry that you need to use!

Store this pie spice in my favorite jars to keep it fresh if you don’t use it all during the season. If stored properly, your pumpkin spice mix will last up to 6 months if you don’t use it all in some awesome recipes.
I also recommend springing for Vietnamese or Saigon Cinnamon and not the Ceylon or Chinese Cinnamon species. The Saigon species tends to be sweeter and have a more intense flavor whereas the Ceylon and Chinese species tends to be spicer, hold up to heat better, but also lose their flavor quicker.
Trust me, the Saigon species is the way to go when baking and for drinks!
