I love summer because it means sitting poolside with cocktails. How about a 3 ingredient margarita? Can’t get more simple than that!
I love making cocktails and being in the sweltering heat of Arizona makes me crave them even more. After I drink enough water that is! Continuing with my simplified Cocktail Fridays, I am bringing you a 3 ingredient margarita that you will be able to put together in a flash. Enjoy!
Last week I started my 3 ingredient cocktail Fridays. I am hoping that you are enjoying the Satsuma Orange Jubilee the I shared. It has been my favorite for a while now and I am glad that you are finally getting to try it.
This next cocktail is a simplified take on a classic. The margarita!
Margaritas have been around for a while with too many variations to count. Remember my blueberry margarita? I love the blueberry puree and the color that it adds to the margarita. Aside from the fruity twists, I love a classic margarita. With simple, straight-up, ingredients.
What ingredients are in a classic margarita?
- Lime juice
- Orange Liqueur or Triple Sec
- and some salt for the rim of the glass.
You can’t get any more simple, or tasty than that.
With regards to ingredients of a margarita, the biggest debate is whether or not to add sugar. Now I love the tartness of limes so I am not one for using sugar, or a simple syrup, or even honey/agave, but I know there are people that do. If we are talking about a fruity margarita, I am all for a sugar rim instead of a salt one.
But I am bringing you this 3 ingredient margarita so we can cut out all the debate, and keep you from having to keep all these other items on hand. Simple, easy, and ready for summer!

So the thing that makes this margarita a simple smash is the Limeade. I use the Simply brand but you can use a frozen or homemade variation. I drink limeade already so having a drink that is really lime juice already sweetened is a bonus in this situation. No one is in the mood to squeeze 1000 limes, which makes my hands hurt even with my juicer, nor do you want to make simple syrup.
I have squeezed limes for fresh margaritas and it is totally worth it, but this summer, I am all about the simple. Moving and unpacking makes me stressed so simple recipes are best. Plus, I need something quick and refreshing after all the hot yoga I have been doing. Nothing too fancy, but certainly tasty!
The only thing that I get fancy on is the garnish! And by fancy, I mean cutting my lime garnish three different ways. Keeping with the theme of three here!
I have been playing around with how to garnish my cocktails and a simple 3 ingredient margarita doesn’t need any extra garnishes besides the lime and salt. So why not cut my limes a fancy way. These garnishes can be made/cut ahead of time so don’t think you are going to be wielding a paring knife instead of wading into the pool with your drink in hand.
The traditional lime wedge is great, but I love the look of a lime wheel or slice. It just gives off a presence on the rim of the glass that you can’t help but smile at. My third one is a lime curl or twist.
The twist can be made with a paring knife (watch the fingers) by slicing off the outer layer of the lime peel and then slicing into strips. I wrapped them around my finger to get the curl shape. You can also use a canelle or channeling knife. I didn’t even know I had one until I unpacked my kitchen utensils and saw it on my zester.
So fun and festive for summer, this 3 ingredient Margarita is perfect for happy hour all day long!
- 1.5 ounces tequila (I prefer Blanco)
- 1 ounce orange liqueur
- 3 ounces limeade (I prefer the Simply Brand)
- limes (for garnish)
- kosher salt (for garnish)
- Mix your tequila, orange liqueur, and limeade in a cocktail shaker.
- Add ice and shake to chill.
- Rub a cut lime or dip the rim of your glass in lime juice to wet it.
- Dip in salt.
- Add ice to the glass.
- Strain your 3 Ingredient Margarita into the ice and rimmed glass.
- Garnish with lime and serve!
