Spring has just sprung but I am already looking forward to summer. No more homework, or dragging myself out of bed early to get everyone else moving and shaking.
I admit that I have enjoyed moving to Arizona as it has officially made me a morning person due to the time change.
This is quite a feat because I have always been a night owl. Just because I call myself a morning person doesn’t mean that I like all the tasks that come with the rise of the sun, it just means that I am getting up early.
No one feels like fussing at everyone to get ready, thinking about all the tasks they have to complete during the day, and feeling like they are running around like a chicken with their head falling off while actually thinking they achieved something.
WOW, that was deep! Actually, I just love going to hot yoga early because the instructor is amazing and then centering myself for the day.
Even in the summer, I am going continue to getting up and going to yoga early so I can have time for myself before Connor starts stirring and bouncing off the walls all day.
Summers in Arizona are hot so no one ventures outside during the day, but when 6 pm hits we are in the pool with a cocktail. Heat needs something bubbly, light, and refreshing.
A citrusy beer cocktail is just what the summer needs!

Doesn’t this look delicious? Last summer I made a 3 ingredient Margarita shandy which got my creative juices flowing with regards to other cocktails I can make with beer.
This Cinco de Mayo I feel like celebrating with other flavors. Lime is used way too much so let’s change the face of Cinco de Mayo with grapefruit!!
Grapefruit may seem a little too tart for some but you have to think of how flavors bring out certain qualities in others.
Much like cayenne brings out the rich flavor of cocoa and chocolate can bring out the flavor of a hot pepper, the tartness of grapefruit can bring out certain flavors in a beer.
If you have never had Modelo you are missing out! Modelo, especially their Especial! Lots of “Especial-ity” going on here. It has a light hoppy flavor and a crisp finish like the grapefruit juice.
The hint of orange blossom and honey in Modelo Especial is only enhanced by the grapefruit.
HOW TO MAKE A GRAPEFRUIT SHANDY
Start with a mixture of grapefruit juice and tequila in the bottom of your glass. If you want to really get the flavors going, chill you beer glasses beforehand.
There are a few pint glasses in my freezer but really there are more bottles of tequila in there than glasses. Not more than the bags of pre-chopped vegetables, but more than beer glasses 🙂
Toss in a few slices of fresh grapefruit too. My grapefruits were a little large so I had to quarter mine to get them to fit. If that is the case with your grapefruit, just use two slices!
Grab your Modelo Especial from the fridge or cooler and slowly pour it into the glass. You can tilt the glass and stream the Modelo Especial along the side of the glass to keep the foam or the “head” to a minimum.
If you pour the Modelo Especial onto the grapefruit slices like I do in my Penitent Punch, it also keeps the foam to a minimum.
My Grapefruit Shady is a great way to kick off your summer and try a new beer while you’re at it!
MORE EASY PARTY FOODS?
- 1 ounce tequila (Casa Noble is a great choice)
- 2 ounces grapefruit juice
- 12 ounces ice-cold [Modelo Especial®]
- grapefruit slices for garnish
- Combine the grapefruit juice and the tequila in the bottom of your glass.
- Add your grapefruit slices.
- Slowly pour in your Modelo Especial®.
- Serve immediately!
