Try this quick and simple, fresh dip at your next barbecue, or gathering!

While the classic store bought packets that you mix with sour cream are great, since coming up with this homemade recipe, the two don’t even compare.

This recipe is fresh and so creamy, and the tangy lemon juice bring out the green onion flavor perfectly. You’ll want to make a double batch!

Definitely a classic crowd favorite that is great for any occasion. Take just 5 minutes to whip it together, plus some chilling time to let the flavors mix, and it’s ready to eat.

Feel free to add some heat to it with cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce. Only if you like a bit of spice. It’s hard to mess this one up.

We love this dip all year round from super bowl to game day to Thanksgiving, it’s one of those recipes we make again and again! Right along with this sour cream and onion dip, this french onion dip, and this chip dip.

Ingredient Notes

Green Onions – AKA Scallions. If you can choose your own fresh green onions go for thinner ones. They have a milder taste. The thicker ones for a more bold flavor.

Parsley – I always prefer to use fresh herbs, but you can substitute for dried ones if you need to, just use half the amount.

Lemon Juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice is best.

Storage

Countertop: Try to only leave the dip out on the counter for a maximum of 2 hours at a time because of the dairy. If the party lasts longer, only put out half and then refill the container when it’s empty.

Refrigerator: Place in an airtight container or cover tightly in plastic wrap for up to 7 days. Stir before serving again.

I wouldn’t recommend freezing this dip as dairy tends to separate if frozen, and the herbs will turn brown!

Serving Suggestions

Green onion dip goes with just about anything! We love it with chips, crackers, and chopped vegetables as a sharing snack.

But you can also use it as a condiment for a salad, as a topping for tacos, or to make that sandwich extra delicious.

Are green onions and scallions the same thing?

To put it shortly, yes. The difference between green onions and scallions is simply how they have been labeled in the store. However, spring onions are different in that their bulbs are bigger than those of green onions, yet you can switch them out in recipes that call for either of them.

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • You can serve this dip straight away, but it is best served after cooling in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 2 hours to let the flavors set.
  • Put some heat into your green onion dip by adding finely chopped jalapenos, a dash of your favorite hot sauce, or some cayenne pepper!
  • You can blend the mixture in your food processor for a smooth green onion dip without bits.
  • Use a non-dairy yogurt instead of the sour cream and cream cheese for a dairy-free dip.
