Best Steak Seasoning Recipe
Yes or no, who has used or Canadian or Montreal Steak Seasoning before? If you answered no, I have no idea who you are and seriously question your life choices. It is a staple in my kitchen just like this country gravy mix.
There is nothing like a big juicy steak. Especially a filet mignon. And the only think you should put on it is something that will take the natural flavor to the next level.
Even if you are a vegetarian, you can use this homemade seasoning mix on veggies and bean burgers to make them even better.

Ingredients Needed
Salt – Use coarse Kosher salt, not table salt. It is great for seasonings as it brings out and enhances the overall flavor. When you make your own spice rubs you can control the level of every spice and herb in it!
Black pepper – This helps to add a little bit of “bite” to your seasoning. For more of a subtle flavor, you could use ground white pepper instead.
Garlic – Use granulated garlic or dehydrated garlic instead of garlic powder but you can use whatever you have on hand.
Smoked paprika – I like the smoky flavor that this provides rather than the sweet flavor of regular paprika. However, you could use either.
Onion – I like to use granulated or minced dried onion (dehydrated onion) for the texture but if you only have onion powder feel free to use that.
Ground coriander – This is used as a boost to the flavor but feel free to leave it out if you don’t like this one.
Crushed red pepper flakes – I like a bit of heat to my spice blends, so feel free to cut back the amount if you’d like your steak seasoning to be more mild. You can also omit it all together.
Ground mustard – This adds a bit of tang and acidity to your seasoning.
Parsley flakes – Be sure to use dried parsley flakes, as fresh will not be shelf stable and will cause your steak seasoning to clump together.

How to make Steak Seasoning Rub
First: Mix all the ingredients together and store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place until ready to use.
Second: Season and cook the steak when ready! I like to use 2 tablespoons per pound of steak.
For the full recipe and detailed instructions, please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
When is the best time to season steak?
Preferably overnight, but up to at least an hour will work if the seasoning contains salt. If it doesn’t contain salt, you can season it immediately before cooking.
Try it on this Bavette Steak, or pork chops, and you will fall in love!
What is the best way to season a steak?
Bring the steaks to room temperature or close to it. Pat the surface of the meat dry.
Apply vegetable oil (not olive oil) and spread a liberal amount of spice mix on on each side of the steak before popping on the grill or pan searing.
Is steak rub gluten free, paleo, keto, and whole 30 compliant?
This recipe is! Some recipes add sugar or bouillon. If you add these they will not be. Check out all these other spice recipes if you are looking to spice up some diet food! My easy chicken seasoning is amazing and one of the most popular posts on the blog.
Tapas Tips & Tricks
- This recipe for simple steak seasoning makes a good amount so make sure that you store it in a cool, dry place. Try a mason jar or spice container.
- If you are trying to be salt free – or low sodium, you can still enjoy this steak seasoning recipe just cut out the salt altogether and then slowly add it back in.
- I can be picky and I like mine spicier than they make it so that means my home version contains more red pepper flakes than is humanly necessary! Feel free to adjust the amount in yours.
- If you want the mix a little finer, toss it in a spice grinder for a quick pulse or two.
- Remember that all ground and dried spices start to lose their potency at about 6 months after opening the jar, so make sure you date the bottles when you open them.
- If they are older, you might need to use a tad more than called for. Simply smell them and taste test a small amount if you have any concerns.

Thank you so much for being a reader! I love to hear from you and how you like the recipes and what recipes you would like to see in the future. The best thing about the spice mixes is that you can make them your own. There are a lot of comments about salt content so I recommend adding the salt last and just a little at a time until you get the mix you like. Enjoy!

My husband is on a low sodium diet, so I make this seasoning mix without the salt. So much better than buying much more expensive "low sodium" seasoning online (it isn't available in my local store). Thanks for the quantities! Much appreciated!
