Lemon Iced Tea
Lemon iced tea is freshly brewed black tea sweetened with homemade lemon syrup made from freshly squeezed lemon juice, sugar, and water. It’s sweet, citrusy, and perfectly balanced – not too tart, not too sweet. Perfect for hot summer days, BBQs, parties, or when you want refreshing homemade iced tea that’s better than store-bought. Ready in 10 minutes plus chill time, makes 8 cups using simple ingredients.

Where are all my tea lovers? I raise my hand because I’m not a big coffee drinker. I wasn’t at all until I discovered shaken espressos and it was all downhill from there. But I still drink tea all day long.
Adding a squeeze of lemon into tea is nothing new, but with a few extra minutes, you can turn those lemons into a lemon syrup to sweeten and take your iced tea to the next level!
This recipe is made with freshly squeezed lemons and mixed with just the right amount of homemade lemon syrup for perfectly balanced sweet lemon iced tea. Just chill and serve over ice with lemon slices and fresh mint. Simple, quick to make, a crowd pleaser, and refreshing all year long!

Ingredient Notes
Lemons – I use 4 smaller organic lemons, or Meyer lemons plus an extra for garnish (5 total).
Sugar – Regular granulated sugar works perfectly. Substitute honey or agave nectar for different sweetness.
Black Tea Bags – I use 8-9 standard Lipton black tea bags (or 4 family-size iced tea bags). Use your favorite black tea brand.
Water – Use pure, filtered, or spring water if possible for best taste. Water quality really matters in tea!
Ice – For serving. Freeze lemon slices in ice cubes for fun presentation!

How To Make Homemade Lemon Iced Tea
- Bring 8 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan on stovetop. Once water boils, turn off heat and add tea bags. Fully submerge tea bags in the water.
- Cover and let tea steep for 5 full minutes. Don’t skip this – proper steeping is key! Remove tea bags, gently pressing liquid from them. Set aside.
- Measure ½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, ½ cup water, and 1 cup sugar into another pot. Turn heat to low and gently stir until sugar completely dissolves. Turn off heat and let cool enough to handle.
- Pour lemon syrup into the tea and stir together. Pour hot tea into a refrigerator-safe pitcher with airtight lid. Refrigerate until cold! Serve over ice with fresh lemon slices and mint sprigs!

Storage & Make-Ahead
Refrigerator: Store in a refrigerator-safe container with tight-fitting lid for up to 5 days. Leave lemon slices out of the pitcher until ready to serve.
Make-Ahead: Prep several days in advance! It stays fresh for 5 days when stored properly.
Best Cold: Chill completely before serving for most refreshing flavor.
Don’t Water Down: Only add ice to serving glasses, not the pitcher, to avoid watering down the tea.
Variations
Decaf: Use decaffeinated black tea bags for caffeine-free version.
Different Sweetener: Try honey or agave nectar instead of sugar. This changes flavor slightly but still tastes great!
Stronger Lemon: Add lemon zest to the simple syrup for more intense lemon flavor.
Less Sweet: Use less sugar if you prefer less-sweet tea.
Sweeter: Add more sugar for really sweet tea. That’s how we make it in Georgia!
Lemon Concentrate: No fresh lemons? Use lemon juice concentrate. Don’t use lemon extract!
Stronger Tea: Use less water for stronger tea flavor.
Green Tea: Use green tea bags instead of black for lighter, more delicate flavor.
Herbal: Try herbal tea bags for caffeine-free fruity version.

Serving Suggestions
Pretty Presentation: Serve in a clear glass pitcher garnished with fresh lemon wedges and mint sprigs.
