Apple Pie Salsa

Who says salsa has to be made with tomatoes? Not this girl! As you can see in my Fruit Salsa Recipe I posted a previously, I chose to use cantaloupe, strawberries, and other ripe fruit.

This Apple Pie Salsa is a riff on that but brings you into the fall months!

Fall months usher in a variety of pumpkin and apple recipes including but not limited to pies, tarts, cookies, and warm drinks and cocktails.

I love baked goods and comfort foods but my waistline does not. An example is the traditional apple pie. Good for the taste buds, not good for the hips.

But how can I get that delicious apple pie flavor with all its warming spices without all the guilt? Apple Pie Spice! Don’t forget to make this fresh cranberry salsa when fall really kicks in.

Ingredients Needed

Apples – I like Granny Smith for this recipe because the tartness balances the other fruit and spices.

Fruit – Pears and kiwi.

Pita Bread – These make better chips than tortilla chips for this salsa in my opinion.

Pantry Staples – Lemon juice, apple pie spice, and cinnamon sugar.

How to make Apple Salsa

PREPARE THE PITA CHIPS: Cut the pita bread into wedges, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 375F for 5 minutes or until toasted. Remove and cool.

MAKE THE APPLE PIE SALSA: Peel and dice all the fruits into small even pieces. Combine in a large bowl. Toss with apple pie spice to coat. Chill until ready to serve with pita chips.

How long does it last?

If stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator, it will last for 3 days. It will start to get watery after that and you might need to drain it.

Do I have to use apples, pears, and kiwi?

You don’t HAVE to use any of these but since it’s apple pie salsa I would at least stick with the apples.

I chose the pears because it adds a little sweetness without adding sugar and the kiwi because I like the lightness of them. Feel free to use all apples if you prefer.

Can I cut the sugar?

You don’t have to add any sugar. If I use tart apples like Granny Smith apples I might but the addition of the pear helps with balance it out. You can also use a sugar substitute like stevia or monkfruit sweetener.

Can I freeze it?

I wouldn’t freeze the apple pie salsa. The idea for this is that it is fresh and not cooked or frozen.

Freezing the fruit will cause the fruit to release all its juices and it will turn into a mess.

pita chip with salsa

I feel the marriage of apple pie and salsa is a success and I hope you will enjoy the crisp, fresh taste of the apples and the hints of warm apple pie.

The texture of the fresh apples, mixed with fresh pears and kiwi, is a great companion to the apple pie spice. The addition of cinnamon and sugar to the pita chips just enhances the overall experience of this Apple Pie Salsa.

My fresh Apple Salsa Recipe can also be added to ice cream, puff pastry for quick tarts, or even chicken!!

This looks absolutely heavenly! I never would have thought of kiwi, but it makes perfect sense for texture, color and sweetness. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
