Salisbury steak brings up memories of TV dinners for a lot of us! Even though my parents ran a restaurant, I still ate my fair share of comfort food. Especially those afternoons when I was home alone doing homework.

There was something stirring the peas into my mashed potatoes and gravy with that hamburger patty. I could eat it all day long!

I still enjoy a good TV dinner every now and then (Trader Joe’s has great upgraded versions), because sometimes you just need some classic comfort food and a good series to watch. But when I have a little more time and want to feed the whole family, this casserole version is perfect.

What makes this recipe so great is all the flavors and less works. No getting your hands messy making hamburger patties! Just brown the ground beef, add the soup and vegetables, top with mashed potatoes, and let the oven do the rest!

Ingredient Notes

  • Ground beef – Use lean ground beef or substitute hamburger patties, ground turkey like these turkey salisbury steaks.
  • Soup mix – Use dry onion soup mix or your favorite dry soup packet, brown gravy, or au jus packet.
  • Mashed potatoes – Great for using up leftover mashed potatoes, make them fresh, or make prep easy with store-bought ones.
  • Mushroom soup – This makes the gravy delicious! You can substitute cream of onion or cream of potato works in a pinch too.

How To Make Salisbury Steak Casserole

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the butte, mushrooms, and onions. Cook until the mushrooms are browned and the onions are soft. Remove and set aside in a bowl.

  1. Add the ground beef and 1/3 cup of the french onion soup to the skillet and cook until no longer pink. Remove from the heat and drain off any excess fat.

  1. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the french onion soup, the soup mix, mushroom soup, water, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, flour, mustard, salt, and pepper. Whisk together to make a sauce.

  1. Spray a 9×13 dish with cooking spray. Spread the cooked ground beef in the bottom in an even layer. Top with the sauce and sprinkle the mushrooms and onions on top.

  1. Drain and rinse the green beans. Spread in an even layer over the mushrooms.

  1. Top with the mashed potatoes and bake at 350F for 25-30 minutes. The casserole will be bubbly, the potatoes starting to brown, and the internal temperature is 165F. Remove and let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Storage

If you have leftovers, store them in the fridge, in an airtight container, for up to 3 days.

Reheat them in the microwave, in 30 second intervals, until warmed through. This is perfect for individual servings. If you are reheating a large portion of the casserole (like if you made it ahead) then the oven at 350F is the best bet.

How To Freeze

Cook as usual and cool completely. Wrap tightly or store in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months.

Thaw overnight to reheat. I love to freeze mine in single portions so I can have them as a quick lunch or easy dinner when my husband is traveling.

Serving Suggestions

Because it has meat, potatoes, and vegetables, it’s a meal all its own. But if you want something to serve with it and stretch that budget a little, I love some extra roasted veggies, a big salad, and crusty bread to get all that yummy gravy.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 10.5 ounces french onion soup
  • ½ medium onion sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter unsalted
  • 8 ounces mushrooms sliced
  • 10.5 ounces cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 14.5 ounces French style green beans
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes prepared

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Spray a 9×13 pan with nonstick spray.
  • In a large skillet cook the ground beef and ⅓ can of french onion soup until the meat is no longer pink. Remove to a bowl and drain excess fat.
  • To the skillet add the butter. Saute the mushrooms and onions in the butter until the mushrooms are brown and the onions are tender.
  • Spread the ground beef in the prepared 9×13 pan.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the remaining ⅔ french onion soup, onion soup mix, condensed mushroom soup, ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, flour, salt, pepper, and mustard. Stir to mix.
  • Pour soup mixture over the ground beef in the 9×13 and spread into an even layer.
  • Top the soup mixture with the mushrooms and onions.
  • Drain and rinse the canned green beans.
  • Spread them over the mushrooms and onions.
  • Top with prepared mashed potatoes and spread into an even layer.
  • Bake at 350F for 25-30 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly and the internal temperature has reached 165F.
  • Remove and let set for 3-5 minutes (it will be runny a little)
  • Serve warm and enjoy.
