My motto for 2014 and every year since then is “You never know when you might need some cream cheese frosting!”

This motto is also great for every year moving forward and I have used this recipe many times! I have been making cakes for some time, and while I enjoy intricate frosting with exotic flavors, I especially love a quick, easy, and delicious frosting recipe that can be used for a variety of purposes!

This cream cheese frosting is delightful on donuts, brownies, and everything in between. It is also a good base for all kinds of add-ins.  I have made this icing for a Thanksgiving wedding cake and added maple syrup!  So many flavors can be added going into fall!  Pumpkin springs to mind…

I also use this recipe on my Strawberry Pretzel Stacks when I’m not in the mood for chocolate.

I just snorted a laugh, since I am always in the mood for chocolate.

This amount will frost a 2 layer, 8 or 9 inches round cake or 24 cupcakes.  Or you can just spoon it into your mouth like my hubby does when he walks by the refrigerator.  If you are not in the mood for getting your mixer dirty and need a good arm workout, I use this batter whisk and this sifter to make things smoother.

Here is my easy recipe for classic cream cheese frosting to keep your fridge well stocked, so in the case of a frosting emergency, you will be prepared.

Cream Cheese Frosting

Yield: 6 cups
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

This classic cream cheese frosting combines butter, cream cheese, and a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness. It is great to have this on hand for all your dessert emergencies!

Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter (room temperature)
  • 2 8-ounce cream cheese/Greek yogurt mixture (room temperature)
  • 2 pounds powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Mix butter and cream cheese until fully combined.
  2. Add the sugar and mix to combine.
  3. Add the salt and vanilla.
  4. Store in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Mine never lasts this long.

Notes

*I recently discovered cream cheese and Greek yogurt combinations blocks and love them. The Greek yogurt adds some tang and cuts through the richness of the cream cheese.

I've been looking for a cream cheese frosting recipe and found yours. Love that it has the cream cheese with Greek yogurt in it.

I've never seen the cream cheese and yogurt mixture - sounds great. And as for not being able to keep this frosting around - amen! If I had a batch of this, I'd mix up some carrot cake and away we'd go :)

I found it in the generic form too! I love it because it has a great tang to it aside from the regular cream cheese flavor. I like to think that it is healthier:)
