Chocolate Peanut Butter Chex Mix Recipe

This sweet and salty Chex mix has all the chocolate and peanut butter flavors found in buckeye candy but with less work! Serve as a fun dessert, kid’s treat, and makes a great gift for the foodie in your life!

A buckeye the Ohio State version of that ever popular chocolate coated peanut butter snack… only Ohio State buckeye fans get way more passionate about it.

So don’t get them confused or else you risk getting tackled on the 50 yard line.

What is a buckeye?

If you have never had the snack version of a buckeye, you are totally missing out. Especially if you love the combination of chocolate and peanut butter!

A Buckeye may be a person that lives in or is from Ohio, but buckeye snacks make a delicious treat from peanut butter fudge and dipped in chocolate. It gets it’s name because it looks like the nut of a buckeye tree.

The snack version buckeye is fantastic. You won’t want to share buckeye snacks with any rivals anyway. Because, let’s face it, chocolate and peanut butter is great but even better combined into a buckeye snack mix!

So how do we turn a candy into a snack mix? Read on my friends!!

Ingredients Needed

Chex cereal – I use the chocolate Chex mix cereal for this. Substitute corn Chex or rice Chex.

Cereal – The chocolate peanut butter Cheerios cereal is perfect for this recipe. Substitute regular Cheerios if needed.

Peanuts – Dry roasted peanuts or almonds.

Chips – This recipe uses a combination of peanut butter chips, mini peanut butter cups, and dark chocolate chips.

Fourth: Drizzle with melted dark chocolate. Cool completely at room temperature to let the chocolate set. Break into chunks and store.

How long does it last?

Chocolate peanut butter Chex mix will last for 2 weeks if stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

I don’t recommend refrigerating (unless it’s very hot in your house) or freezing it. The chocolate can separate and turn ashy when you thaw it.

Is it gluten free?

The Chex cereal part is but the Cheerios are not certified gluten free as they are processed in a facility that isn’t gluten free. Just be sure to check the individual ingredients to make your determination.

All the other ingredients I use in this recipe are considered gluten free but of course the snack mix is not peanut free so if you have a peanut allergy, this Buckeye snack mix is not for you.

What if I can’t find mini peanut butter cups?

If you can’t find them, I would suggest plain chocolate chips, or small chocolate candy bar pieces.

This snack mix is crazy good and easy! The first time I made it I had trouble drizzling my melted chocolate chips on the mix. The next time I made it, I melted the chocolate chips, then added 1 tablespoon of refined coconut oil, and it made it so much easier to drizzle the melted chocolate chips! Thanks for a great snack!

This is delicious and easy to make. We added red M & M's to give it a more "Buckeye" feel and we're eating this on the way to the College Football Playoff NC for the Buckeyes!!!!
